DreamSpec Posted by CyRUS64 @ 15:39
The recently released Spectrum Emulator for the Dreamcast now has a name -> DreamSpec. (it seems a very popular thing to call a dc emu "Dream"+console name - first DreamSnes, then DreamGen, now DreamSpec... although the emulator DreamGBC isn't actually a dreamcast emulator!)

Version 0.0002 has also been released and it nows features disk and directory access, and the ability for others to add games easily! It has some games built-in already, and runs all games, albeit not necessarily perfectly... the previous version has had good feedback and i understand it ran Manic Minor full-speed with few problems although like many dc emus it had no sound!

You can download this release here.

Thanks to emulation-x for the news...

On another note, has anyone managed to get any scans of (or even read) the Edge Article regarding Dc Development?

ngine SNES9x 0.30 Released Posted by Stalin @ 1:26

Genesis emu.. Posted by CyRUS64 @ 23:32
A port of the Sega Genesis Emulator DGEN now has its own webpage up and can be found here!
The emulator is called DreamGen, although not related to DreamSNES and the port is being done by completely different coders :-)
They mention that they will be using the same programming code that DreamSNES was made in, but i presume this means they are just using Dan Potter's LibDream library and not actually using any of the emulation code!

Spectrum Emu for DC Posted by CyRUS64 @ 21:45
Thanks go to Spinal for reminding me about the Spectrum Emu that was recently released... sorry i hadn't updated sooner about it but the fact that it was impossible to download meant that i decided to wait until i actually had posted a mirror on boob.
I haven't tried out this emulator myself but I understand it contains Manic Minor in-built into the emu and hence this is the only game currently supported!
If anyone does decide to test out this Discjuggler image, feel free to email in some pics / reports on what the emu is like.

You can download the emulator here.

My Site Up Posted by Stalin @ 17:12
There is not much there as of yet except for a couple skate parks that I made. Hopefully soon I will be able to expand on it some more. Anyway here is the address: http://ww2.realftp.com/stalin/. This is not the permanent site but it will work for now.

emulatronia... Posted by CyRUS64 @ 11:39
It looks like they are justifiably off the hook! It was the equivalent of April fools day in Spain yesterday...

Edge Magazine Posted by CyRUS64 @ 11:37
For all those in the UK (i dont know if they sell it abroard) Edge Magazine have written an article on Dreamcast Home Development! There are plenty of quotes from various members of the dc scene, and if anyone who owns a scanner happens to buy an issue, do send in some scans for me to post on the site for those unable to purchase a copy...
They have though made a mistake in one of the references to Boob when they directed readers to boob.com! (a porn site)

More Links Posted by Stalin @ 3:09
I got a couple links in the mail today from Martin Lawes so I have put them up on the links page under roms.

On a side note, I am about to begin work on a page dedicated to Tony Hawk 2 user created skate parks. Look for the link soon :)

More Links Posted by Stalin @ 19:27
I went ahead and put up a couple more links while I was at it.

Links Section Posted by Stalin @ 19:10
I have put a link in the links section. It is a link to a site that carries free roms for the gameboy. These are roms written by people with knowledge gleamed from documentation that is freely available on the internet and as such are not commercial roms and are freely distributable. If you know of any more such sites email them to me and I will check them out and if they are legit will post them.

Don't be fooled... Posted by CyRUS64 @ 14:44
A previously well-respected Emulation News site has posted some of the most blatantly fake pictures of the DC Emulator Dreamer running Crazy Taxi... the pictures are taken from a preview article. I wont name the site, since i dont what to give them publicity, but don't be fooled if you come across news of a new working Dreamcast Emulator!
The pictures are "full-screen" with no gfx-errors whatsoever :-)
They even said it was running at "ONLY" 10fps on an AMD 700! (if only)

NeoPocott Posted by CyRUS64 @ 11:34
NeoPocott DC v1.0 has been released - 2.5 hours late :-) (understandably though!)...

The official compatibility list for all ports of NeoPocott can be found here.

You can download NeoPocott DC here.

Or you can view the NeoPocott DC docs here.

Or you can get visit the official website here!

Thanks to Brian Peek for the email, and congratulations for making a great release of this fine emu!

boring stupid email... Posted by CyRUS64 @ 11:28
I asked you guys not to send stupid emails:

"hey man, you seem up to date with this dreamcast stuff, are they making a way so that you can read a DC game on your computer so you can copy and burn it from an original?"

I wont post the guy's email address yet :-)

libdream 0.95 released. Posted by TheGypsy @ 7:39
For fellow developers out there, Dan Potter has just released v0.95 of his libdream library. He has taken the cdfs from his K-OS and moved it into libdream -- which was the last non-X11-license component. So, libdream now fully falls under the X11 license. It also includes some other minor changes. See Dan's Cryptic Allusion DCDev site for more details and the download itself.

DCPSX Canceled Posted by Stalin @ 16:23
It seems that the authors of DCPSX have decided that they can not go on with the project. "DCPSX has been canned why you may ask. well the *$&^%*$ in dc-iso have made it impossible for me to get at the source, or any compiled versions." I am not too sure what that means. Why would they not have the source to their own project? In any event you can read more at http://kinox.org/dcpsx/.

GypPlay Burning Guide! Posted by CyRUS64 @ 10:57

Boob!boy pirated. Posted by CyRUS64 @ 10:27
I have been informed that the Hooligans "release" of a gameboy emulator with roms is in fact Boob!boy. To be honest it doesnt really bother me because im giving it away for free anyway, but changing the loading screens is a bit "lame" imo... anyhow it is bound to not be the latest release of Boob!boy, so its best advisable to stay clear :-)
And if someone really feels the need to pirate gameboy games they are not too difficult to find on the internet anyway! (www.emuhq.com has an appropriate affiliate website)

mmm Posted by CyRUS64 @ 1:14
is boobboy being pirated now???

"GameBoy_Emu_With_Roms_For_DC-HOOLIGANS"

is this a version of boob!boy or ANOTHER gameboy emulator for dreamcast?

The Emulators page is also completely up-to-date and i've updated the Boob!boy progress page!

New Playstaion Emulator Port Posted by Stalin @ 16:07

ngine-Snes9x Posted by CyRUS64 @ 22:27
The first public version of ngine-Snes9x has now been released!
Here is some info about this release:

most games that snes9x supports are also working in ngine.
command line interface (see how to use section)
joypad control for snes9x (see how to use section)

You can get more information about the release and download it at Tubooboo's website, here.

Boob!boy 1.5 release! Posted by CyRUS64 @ 22:18
This is the biggest release of Boob!boy for a while, so its "probably" worth a download. However there may well be some annoying bugs / problems and in that case I will of course release some "quick fixes"... if so then just send me a quick email and ill attempt to sort any out. However "no sound" is NOT a small bug :-)

Here is what's new in version 1.5:

-Frameskip implemented - Boob!boy should now be faster with only a small amount of frameskipping noticeable. For example, Super Mario Land without doubt now runs at FULL SPEED.
-Super Gameboy Support added. You can now play games such as Pokemon Red, if you really want to.
-Fixed a memory problem that meant memory wasn't being freed up after the game was exited and hence when you had played 4/5 games the dc would run out of memory and crash. You should now be able to play as many different games as you want without having to reset the dc!
-Swapped around A and B keys to make it more like a real gameboy!
-New menus - a license screen is now displayed explaining that Boob!boy is not licensed or endorsed by Sega. Also a menu screen has been implemented which currently only features a "Play game" option... (pretty pointless at the moment then - just press start to skip past this menu!)
-Made game-select screen more user-friendly by speeding up page-select and game-select movements
-Fixed bug causing a delay before loading the game to be played
-Implemented load-from-file functions, saving much-needed memory... this also has resulted in a speed-up in the emulation since Video Ram can now be used for more important tasks!
-Found and "zapped" other little bugs in the code, which although didn't cause any problems in current versions would have done so in the future.

This is however sadly likely to be the last major release for a while of Boob!boy. (I only have 4 cdrs left and i haven't got around to ordering the MAX chip for my neogeo->dc cable!)

Feel free to report any problems to me either via email, the forums, or in #boob on efnet!

You can download the new release here or view the info file here.

Boob!boy Posted by CyRUS64 @ 17:39
Although its christmas and i'm obviously very busy in the real world, i have found time to code the bitmap loading stuff... this was a much needed thing to do anyhow and im glad i've got around to achieving it!
The Boob!boy executable file has now gone from being 4.5mb (ugh!) to just 87kb :-)
I just need to test this on the dc first and i might play around a bit more with the code before a release will occur, but it will be before christmas (maybe today/tomorrow)...

DreamSNES v0.9.3 Posted by TheGypsy @ 14:35

dcload update... Posted by TheGypsy @ 15:30
Andrewk has released v1.0.1 of dcload, his serial loader which supports compressed transfers (among other things). I personally use this and prefer it over Marcus' Serial Slave. The Win32 version of DC-Tool for uploading to dcload has also been updated. It now also includes baudrate setting support that I quickly threw in. You can get it all from Andrewk's dcload page.

Lik-Sang Coders Cable Update... Posted by TheGypsy @ 14:56
Lik-Sang is reporting that the DC Coders Cable is now confirmed as complete and working -- and that they are now simply waiting for the full supply to arrive. They expect to start shipping before the end of the year to those of you that preordered them. You should get an email from them as soon as your order ships. Just wanted to let you know...

irritating... Posted by CyRUS64 @ 14:02
Although clearly documented in the Windows CE for Dreamcast helpfiles, the LoadImage function does not seem to support the LR_LOADFROMFILE flag! This is really irritating cuz i had everything set up and working, and then when i compile under a dc environment i get the damn LR_LOADFROMFILE undeclared identifier error :-)
Thus i will now have to write my own image reading function...
Bloody Microsoft.

quick note... Posted by CyRUS64 @ 21:44
NeoPocott runs now at full speed on the DreamCast! I personally am looking forward to a release of this emulator in the near future...

Boob!boy Posted by CyRUS64 @ 13:34
I'm going to give up on the background music for this release :-(

I've tested the latest version and it is working well but i want to save some memory by loading the bitmaps from a file rather than having them stored in the executable... this shouldnt take too long, so today's release should still occur!

As for the sound (or non-sound as the case may be) i do have various angles from which i shall attack it from, and i am in the opinion that the problems causing the background music to crash could well be the same ones causing the actual in-game music to not work / crash the dc! hence if i fix the background music, we may well have in-game music soon after... lets hope so anyway.

Btw: i'm not sure whether people want such detailed / frequent updates or posts about my work... if not then please say so in the forums!

please... Posted by CyRUS64 @ 12:41
Can people stop emailing me asking to know how to copy dc games or rip dc games or rip music / videos from dc games! Otherwise ill start posting the emails such as this that i receive.... here is an example email i got today:
"hi, i do not know if you know how to copy dc games but if you do know how could you please e-mail me beginner instructions. or maybe you know a site that may have those type of instructions. I'd appreciate the help"
I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO COPY DC GAMES!

aargh! Posted by CyRUS64 @ 2:01
I've got the latest version fully up-and-running on the pc! However the sound on the dc is causing problems... despite the fact that it SHOULD work it still crashes -> my only idea is that the buffersize is too large but microsoft themselves recommended this size in a sample app! I don't have time to burn another cd to test cuz its 2:00am... i better get some sleep, but later today ill do my best to release a new version. (with or without background sound - i really really hope i can get it to work though)

Just to whet your appetite you can view tomorrow's info file here.
There's quite a few new features over Version 1.1, but I can't promise that these will all be included but they are all working perfectly on the pc and the only one really in doubt is the background music as mentioned above!

finally... Posted by CyRUS64 @ 18:18
found the problem :-)
hadn't set DSBCAPS_CTRLPOSITIONNOTIFY in the dwFlags property of the buffer!

mmm... Posted by CyRUS64 @ 15:48
yet to sort out the problem with the background music :-(
anyone know why SetNotificationPositions might cause the program to crash??? - ive set up a queryinterface, used createevent, set up the hEventNotify and dwOffset variables of the DSBPOSITIONNOTIFY variable, but it STILL crashes!

Boob!boy Posted by CyRUS64 @ 1:13
I was planning on making another release tonight, which would have included Customizable Background Menu Music (wav form), and i even had it working in a "Load the music into memory method" (obviously very limited use) and have tried to create a "Streaming music method"... it should now work but after a lot of head-scratching i have pinpointed the problem down to the SetNotificationPositions function of directsound. However i dont know why this is causing the problem since if i blank out this line i get the first half-second of the wave file repeating itself and thus everything is sort of working. If anyone has any great ideas as to why this could be causing the program to crash please contact me!

I have also fixed a memory problem in Boob!boy which was causing the emulator to lock up after 4/5 games had been played... (this will be in the next release - probably tomorrow)

Anyhow here is a "new version" which some of you might have downloaded inadvertently...

Here is what's new:

-Super Gameboy Support added (although borders are not actually displayed) - this means you can now play some of those beautiful Pokemon Games such as Pokemon Red that wouldn't work before!

-Made game-select screen more user-friendly by speeding up page-select and game-select movements
-Fixed bug causing a delay before loading the game to be played

-Swapped around A and B keys to make it more like a real gameboy!

You can view the info file here or download version 1.2 here.

It is HOWEVER recommended that you wait for another release tomorrow! (this will probably be called version 1.5 since one of the major obstacles has now been overcome - super gameboy games crashing)

Remember: if you need help or want to chat about dc development you can either visit us on efnet in #boob or go to our message board... (a link is on the left!)

ngine-Snes9x Posted by CyRUS64 @ 1:11
ngine-SNES9x is going to be released within the next couple of days. Tubooboo has posted some new pics of Final Fantasy 2, Chrono Trigger, Desert Strike, and ISS, in action on the site, which can be found here.

He has fixed nasty bug that did not allow to load ROMs greater than 512kb in size and it is thus all set for release, albeit with No sound or saving (yet!).

Currently only the keyboard is supported but Controller support should be added soon...

As with the other Snes9x ports on the DC (Dreamsnes / Sintendo) it will also run at only 65% full speed but he is aiming at eventually porting the CPU to SH4 assembly which could mean we might finally have a fullspeed Snes emulator on our beloved dreamcasts!

BTW: sorry about the downtime but this happened to all EmulationWorld-hosted sites.

Boob!boy Posted by CyRUS64 @ 17:13
Don't get too excited but here is a slightly updated Boob!boy version 1.1a... all this does is fix problems with having too many games on a cd!
Also you now only need to download the file below, rather than downloading burn.zip and boobboy.zip. This is because some of you were getting confused on how to use Boob!boy.

PLEASE, PLEASE read the nfo-file before attempting to burn the cd / emailing me asking for help! (It really is very simple to do...)

Sorry that this is not a nice new version but i am currently working on other stuff. I do however return to Boob!boy every now and again, so new releases will popup when stuff gets fixed! (hence the releases maybe shitty and not worth bothering with)

You can download Boob!boy 1.1a here. If you have no problems getting Boob!boy to work currently it is recommeneded that you do NOT download this new version!

Ngine-dgen
NeoPockottDC
Hugo
DCPSX
Bleem!cast

Updated:
Ngine-snes9x
Boob!boy
Sintendo
Lunar (ITS FAKE)

Thanks must go to the Ventress who provided some of the information required and urged me to update the page!

Dreamemu Posted by CyRUS64 @ 9:44
You might have read about the recent release of Dreamemu, an extremely (well currently anyway) basic dreamcast emulator for the pc... if you'd like to find more info about this emu then visit the site here.

I thought i'd post a pic of it attempting to run Boob!boy... it only displays the license screen at the moment, but is different to the screenshot on the site since it shows the Windows CE logo also!

On another note if anyone wishes to compile a compatibility list for any of the currently avaiable emulators for dreamcast, feel free to send one in and i'll post it! (There is no need to send in one for Boob!boy as this is being covered already and DreamSnes / Sintendo / Ngine-Snes9x should all have the same compat. levels for obvious reasons.)

Emulation Happenings Posted by Stalin @ 6:36
1) There seems to be a ZX Spectrum emulator out there but I can not find a web page for it. You can view screenshots at http://www.vintagegaming.com in the news for December 14, 2000.

2) The author of NeoPocottDC has sent out a private beta and says that a public release should be here before christmas.

3) tubooboo has progressed on his port of snes9x and just has one more thing to fix before he can release it (seems he has a nasty memory leak to take care of). He has also released some information about a port of DGen that he is working on; so far it compiles and executes on the Dreamcast it just does not render yet because the rendering code for DGen is x86 assembly and that will take some time to rework for the Dreamcast. tubooboo also stated that he is working on an mp3 player.

$10 games direct from Sega... Posted by TheGypsy @ 19:03
The SegaStore has a selection of games for only $9.95 each right now. Currently available are:
- ChuChu Rocket
- Dynamite Cop
- Maken X
- Rippin' Riders
- Seaman (with microphone)
- Space Channel 5
- Toy Commander
- Virtua Fighter 3tb
- Zombie Revenge

Not the greatest games, but probably worth it for $10. Note that they are not in the "Sale" section -- you just have to go through the main game list to see them. Note that the SegaStore only ships to US addresses at this time...

Burning DCLinux... Posted by TheGypsy @ 2:42
For those trying to burn DCLinux -- note that you really need to do a self-boot or you will have problems. In other words, don't just burn it and except to be able to use a Boot Disc to boot it. Just use the 1ST_READ.BIN and IP.BIN to do a selfboot. Note that you do not, of course, have to use anything such as Echelon's BINHACK -- because no GD init code is required, since there are no additional files to load.

Oh, and if you want to use a keyboard (kinda pointless without -- almost pointless with too, but anyhow...) -- be sure to connect it to port D. I've found that it sometimes doesn't get detected if it is the only device in the machine. Put a controller in A and the keyboard in D and it seems more reliable. Still drops characters like crazy though if you type too fast. Oh well...

Big news - Linux for Dreamcast! Posted by CyRUS64 @ 23:59
A Dreamcast port of Linux has been released... apparently it is fully working, although is not much use without a keyboard! More info as it comes in...

You can however download it here

Emu news... Posted by CyRUS64 @ 18:03
Here is a new screenshot of the selecting screen for NeoPocott DreamCast !

Brian Peek has also made some speed improvements for his port and he is working on a FPS counter. A release before christmas is also on the cards... you can visit the NeoPocottDC website here.

Also some progress has been made with the port of the PSX emulator Jackal, called DCPSX. The author Infector is getting some pictures developed of the emu running a game, although the crontrols are still unresponsive and it runs at about 1% of the speed of a regular playstation game.
Anyhow it is still a great achievement... and you can get more info about DCPSX here!.

Thats enough DC emu news for the time being.

General stuff Posted by CyRUS64 @ 11:36
All those people who have recently emailed me with sensible suggestions/questions/offers please email me again, since i am now able to check my email account several times daily!
I have also started coding again, and if i get anywhere with either any new projects or boob!boy, i'll announce it here in the near future...

With regards to Boob!boy i have actually begun VMU saving support, but haven't yet spent any real time on it, since its not on the list of my current priorities.

On a sidenote, completely dc unrelated, if anyone has any information on the Sega Model 2 hardware, could they email me asap... someone from Sega must visit this site :-)

PSX for dreamcast (not bleem!) Posted by CyRUS64 @ 13:54

Hi! Posted by CyRUS64 @ 13:22
I'm back from university...
A great thanks to TheGypsy and Stalin for keeping Boob! alive-and-kicking, and we should all be able to continue and improve it over the next few weeks!

Hmmmmm Posted by Stalin @ 1:58
I went to check the gleam page for updates and found out that they removed gleam.vg-network.com and it can not only be accessed from http://gleam.vintagegaming.com. I am not totally sure what it happening with that site any more. It has consistently gone down hill since it changed from www.davesclassics.com to www.vintagegaming.com. Sorry for the confusion.

Also I noticed that http://sintendo.dcwarez.com is no longer working. Niether does http://surf.to/sintendo which, according to Sin, should always point to the current location of the Sintendo web page.

Howdy folks Posted by Stalin @ 22:34
Maybe you recognize me from the message board? Well I am now here to keep you informed of the emulation happenings on the Dreamcast. I am an avid emulation fanatic so I should be able to keep the emulation section alive here on Boob. And for my first order of business I will give a correction for the gleam! link. For a while now http://www.vintagegaming.com has been having a slu of problems so if you want to view the gleam! page use http://gleam.vg-network.com because that domain is much more stable.

NeoPocott:
The folks over at http://www.ganksoft.com are porting the NeoGeo Pocket emulator from windows to the Dreamcast. It seems that it is already in a good condition because they have screenshots.

#boob on EFnet... Posted by TheGypsy @ 16:06
Just a quick thank-you to "nrg" for helping to recover #boob from being opless. Due to some crazy netsplits last week, the channel ended up having noone with ops. That has since been corrected.

Those with reasonable questions or that want to chat about DC development can feel free to stop by #boob on EFnet. Please refrain from discussing things that I find annoying these days (pirating, gdrom ripping, the color of your cat's most recent hairball, why you think your Gameboy/TG16/Vectrex/whatever is the best console ever, why you think I should stop hating emus, why you think DivX doesn't suck even though I know it does, and so on). Thanks.

As for Development updates that have occurred over the past couple weeks when we had no updates...

KallistiOS 0.6
- Dan Potter released v0.6 of KallistiOS earlier this month. Note that it is meant for developers, not general users -- just to mention that before anyone gets the wrong idea. In any case, looks like great stuff so far, check it out at his software projects page.

New/different custom Serial Cable
- For those of you finding it difficult to locate a NGPC-to-DC cable (or a DC-to-DC cable) that still want to make your own serial cable, DCGrendel has put up some decent instructions for you. His method uses either two DC SVideo cables or one DC RGB/SCART cable. If you can find a NGPC-to-DC cable to cut up, I still think that using that is a better solution, but DCGrendel's method will certainly help those having difficulting locating the NGPC-to-DC cable to start with. (I believe the idea was originally done by Matthias Brukner -- just to give credit where credit is due.)

Lik-Sang's DC<>PC Serial Cables
- For those of you waiting for Lik-Sang's pre-built serial cables, you'll need to do a bit more waiting. They were listing "the end of November" as their latest release date. I contacted them yesterday to check on an update and was told that the cable has been delayed again. Apparently, they received their first batch, but they were non-working, so they are having the problem corrected. If you are in a hurry -- I'd recommend just building your own like the rest of us did. :) I'll let you know if I hear anything new.

Win32 port of dcload
- Florian 'Proff' Schulze has ported andrewk's dcload tool to Win32 for those interested. You can get it (along with the rest of dcload) from
andrewk's dcload page.

That'll do for now...
